Social Media and Learning Environments

Social Media and Learning Environments

When you reflect on previous years social media has had an significant effect on the learning environment.  Introducing technology to higher education was simply taboo at one point.  The use of power point was available, but was that the extent to which the teachers were trained in?  In an article written by Ellen Hoffman she talks about the barriers to technology.  Although new tools have been developed and instructors have been trained it gives them the ability to tailor their basic learning environment to one that is more creative.  Some barriers include limitations of access, training and computer literacy, lack of evidence of effectiveness, and the expense of the appropriate software (Hoffman, 2011).  This article also points out the positive effects that social networking sites have on learning.  Studies have shown that by utilizing SNS they have increased social relationships, give you an outlet for self expression, and you are able to gain and give information when needed.  All in all I think this article was a interesting one that pointed out valuable information on the change that social media has brought to learning environments.  So does it have an effect? In my opinion yes it does.  Technology has more advancing to do, but when the two environments come together and form one bond; it is going to be powerful enough to make a difference in the lives of educators and their students.
